You may have started to hear the news stories warning of a very bad and very long tick season, but if not, keep reading to get the information you need. Public health officials are warning of the increased number of deer ticks creeping around the great outdoors. Ticks do not carry Lyme disease inherently, they catch it from rodents. The warmer than usual winter and spring is causing mosquitos to show up sooner throughout the country. Here are some tips to help you prepare to reduce the mosquito population around your home and prevent itchy bites.
1. Mosquitos are attracted to skin, cover up with long sleeves and pants when outside
2. Chemical sprays also help, DEET is the standard, but unless you are in a heavily infested area, try a more natural spray containing lemon eucalyptus oil
3. Use a fan while outside to not just keep you cool, but to blow mosquitos away
4. Dump any standing water including bird baths at least once a week to reduce breeding locations
5. Clean your gutters

DIY – Natural pest control tips for your kitchen

While thorough cleaning is always a foundation of pest control, here are some other tips and tricks you can add to your pest control program.
Ants: Use a damp sponge with 6 to 8 drops peppermint or citronella essential oil to wipe cabinets. Place 3 to 5 drops of the same oil on windowsills, doorway cracks and in the corners of cabinets under the kitchen sink.
Centipedes, earwigs, silverfish: Place several drops of peppermint, eucalyptus or citronella essential oil in areas that collect moisture such as basements, garages and cabinets that house plumbing fixtures.
Mice: Place sprigs of fresh peppermint between pantry items in your cabinets, or make a solution of 2 cups water and 3 teaspoons of peppermint essential oil and spray it wherever you find mouse droppings.
